Sprint with two after 60 km in the break
Just as the previous years, the U23 team has headed to Benicasim for a two-week training camp. On January 31st, all 22 riders flew out to Spain to get in shape for the 2019 season.
Kurt Van de Wouwer, head of the sports department of Lotto Soudal U23, shares his views on the upcoming training period: “It’s the fourth consecutive year that we have opted for Benicasim. The surrounding area is ideally suited to get the riders all set for the upcoming cycling season. The nearby coast offers plenty of flat roads, while mountain tops with an altitude over a thousand meters are only a few kilometres away.”
“During this training period, we will ensure that the riders have a great base on which they can build for the rest of the season. The riders who have just finished their exam period, and who might have ridden less kilometres, will have a slightly adapted training regime. We will also train on specific race situations during these two weeks, such as the build-up of the sprint train and the lead-out.”
“In terms of the attendance, it’s possible to split this training camp in three. All 22 riders are present for the first seven days of training. This offers a unique opportunity to build and further strengthen the team spirit. The team does not stay complete for the whole period, though, since several riders have school obligations to attend to. After the first week seven riders will head back home. Another seven riders will stay a few days longer for an eleven-day training camp, while eight riders will train in Benicasim for the full two weeks.”
