Lotte Kopecky 2nd on Giro Rosa Stage 5
"I'll keep chasing that victory."
After a thrilling last stage, Lotte Kopecky finished second overall yesterday at the Lotto Belgium Tour. The Lotto Soudal Lady crossed the finish line on the Vesten in Geraardsbergen as fourth, only a handful of seconds after stage winner Coryn Rivera. Mieke Kröger gave all she got on the steep finish and managed to safeguard her first place on GC. She crossed the finish line nineteen seconds after Kopecky, which meant she had eight seconds lead left.
The four-day stage race Lotto Belgium Tour ended with a stage of 85 kilometres that started and finished in Geraardsbergen. After one big loop of about forty kilometres the riders had to cover three laps of 14.3 kilometres, containing the ascents of the Muur and Onkerzelestraat. After claiming the fifth place in the opening time trial, the third place on stage two after a break with Kröger and Cordon-Ragot and sprinting to third place at the end of stage three, Kopecky was second overall at the start of the final stage, 29 seconds down on Mieke Kröger.
During the first ascent of the Muur six riders created a gap. That way Kopecky and Cordon-Ragot, who was third on GC, took time back on Mieke Kröger. The gap didn’t get much bigger than 30 seconds. It was Coryn Rivera who was the best of the front group on the Vesten, claiming her second stage win in a row. Kopecky got fourth, behind Liane Lippert and Sofie De Vuyst. No bonus seconds for Kopecky and so the actual time gap would be decisive for the overall win. A thriller for the riders and spectators. After a few moments Mieke Kröger got the news that she was the overall winner, as she maintained eight seconds lead over Lotte Kopecky.
