Alec Segaert, rider of the Lotto Soudal Development Team, has crowned himself Belgian champion in the U23 time trial category. The 19-year-old was the fastest over two local laps in Gavere, which covered a total distance of 23 kilometres. Segaert clocked a time of 28'17", good for an average speed of 49 kilometres per hour. Alec Segaert succeeds his teammate and former Belgian time trial champion Lennert Van Eetvelt, who finished third on the podium.

"Of course I am very happy with this Belgian title, but especially also relieved," says Alec Segaert. "Beforehand everyone pointed me out as the man to beat, which caused some additional pressure. It had been a long time since I could conquer a Belgian jersey. My ambition was to win and I'm glad I did, even though the difference was quite small. The course in Gavere wasn't exactly my cup of tea with its many corners. I prefer long straights, where you can use all your power. It was down to details today and I still miss some cornering technique, but luckily there were also still enough straights where you could make the difference."

"With this title, I look forward with confidence to my next goal, the U23 version of Paris-Roubaix. Last year as a junior I came second and this year I hope to do well again. The competition will be fierce with the international top all there, but it is a heroic race anyway. I just want to give everything and then we'll see where we end up. I have already proved that I am in good shape.”
