ProTeam Florian Vermeersch moves into white jersey at Paris-Nice

John Degenkolb sprints to 6th place in stage two Paris-Nice.

Florian Vermeersch moved into the white jersey after stage two of Paris-Nice, which the Lotto Soudal earned after taking two bonification seconds at the first intermediate sprint of the day.

“The breakaway was caught really early and I was on the front rows of the bunch, so it was just too good an opportunity to let pass”, says Florian Vermeersch. “When Michael Matthews went at the intermediate sprint, I took his wheel and I was a little surprised that nobody reacted. Actually, it didn't take a lot of effort to grab those bonus seconds. It's also a nice way to move up in the general classification, that way I can start somewhat later during tomorrow's time trial. A jersey in a race like Paris-Nice definitely is something special, especially as it’s only my first full year as a professional cyclist.”

The peloton split into several parts during a nervous stage between Oinville-sur-Montcient and Amilly, but finally it all came back together as the riders headed for a bunch sprint. The Dutchman Cees Bol won the stage, Lotto Soudal rider John Degenkolb sprinted to 6th place.
